This award recognizes outstanding contributions in economics by American economists who were under the age of forty at the time of award. The Clark medal is generally considered to be the second most prestigious in the field; approximately one-third of its recipients have subsequently received the Nobel Prize.

1. Hendrik Houthakker was the son of the Dutch-Jewish art dealer Bernard Houthakker; his mother, née Marion Lichtenstein, was also Jewish. (Information supplied by a Dutch-Jewish family member.) A 19 April 2003 article and interview with Houthakker in the Valley News, a Vermont newspaper, stated that he grew up in a Jewish family in Amsterdam and was sheltered on a farm for eight months by a Roman Catholic family after escaping from Gestapo arrest.
